How to Apply Tape-in Hair Extensions at Home
Tape-in hair extensions are one of the most popular and beginner-friendly methods of adding length and volume. Follow this step-by-step guide to achieve a salon-quality result at home.
What You Will Need
- Tape-in hair extension wefts
- Sectioning clips
- Rat tail comb
- Rubbing alcohol or extension-safe cleanser
- Hair dryer (optional, for sealing)
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Prepare Your Hair
Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove any product buildup. Do not use conditioner on the roots where the extensions will be applied — this ensures the tape adheres properly.
2. Section Your Hair
Using the rat tail comb, create a horizontal part about 1 inch above your nape. Clip the rest of your hair up and out of the way.
3. Prepare the Extensions
Peel the backing off one tape-in weft to expose the adhesive strip. Take a second weft and peel its backing as well — these two will "sandwich" your natural hair.
4. Apply the First Weft
Place the first weft (adhesive side up) underneath a thin section of your natural hair, about 0.5 inches from the root.
5. Sandwich with the Second Weft
Press the second weft (adhesive side down) on top of the section, directly on top of the first weft. Press firmly along the entire tape strip.
6. Seal the Bond
Use your fingers to press firmly for 30 seconds. For extra hold, use a flat iron on low heat (about 250°F) to gently press the tape closed.
7. Continue Working Up
Release the next section of hair and repeat the process. Work your way up the head, leaving at least 2 inches from your part line.
Tips for Success
- Don't place extensions too close to your hairline — leave at least 1 inch of natural hair around the perimeter
- Avoid oil-based products near the tape bonds
- Extensions can last 6-8 weeks before needing to be repositioned
- Sleep with a silk pillowcase to reduce friction
Maintenance
Wash extensions gently and avoid scrubbing the tape area. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle, starting from the ends and working your way up.
